Many of us have experiences like that from time to time but usually dismiss them as figments of our own imaginations. What, though, should you do if these occurrences cannot be dismissed? What if you are convinced that what you are experiencing is the work of a ghost or spirit? Then perhaps you need the services of a ghost buster (more accurately known as a paranormal investigator). These investigators assert that they can use special equipment and skills to determine whether a location is truly haunted. In addition, some even promise to rid a place of ghostly activity.
Curious about the ghost hunting process, I spoke to Rev. Mike Einspanjer, owner of Memphis Paranormal Investigations. Here is what he had to say.
T.S. When you are called to a location to do an investigation, what tests or other procedures are done to check for paranormal activity?
M.E. The first thing we do when arriving at a location, is to walk around and get a "feel" of the place. It usually takes 20 minutes to set up all of our equipment. Equipment used varies on the situation. We use Electro-magnetic field detectors, to check for energy anomalies. We check for drops in temperature. We always research the history of land before an investigation. Sometimes the history will explain a possible haunting.
T.S. Is there any charge for your services?
M.E. There are NEVER any charges for our services! We feel changing for an investigation takes away from credibility.
T.S. What are some symptoms that a house or other location may be haunted?
M.E. We get calls from individuals reporting hearing voices, smelling perfumes not worn by any living member of the house, seeing objects moved, or being touched by someone they can't see. You can imagine how un-nerving that could be.our goal is to make the homeowner feel more comfortable, and to get the ghosts to where they truly belong.
T.S. Have you ever seen a ghost with your own eyes?
M.E. Many, many times. I always tell people that if you don't believe in ghosts, just come on a hunt with us one time. You will see or hear a ghost in action.
T.S. Are there any local hotbeds of supernatural activity?
M.E. Several! Ernestine and Hazel's is one of the most haunted buildings in town. They also happen to have the very best burgers in the world. Tell Russell or Karen we sent you!
T.S. How long has Memphis Paranormal Investigations been in operation?
M.E. Since October 2001
T.S. How many investigators are on your team?
M.E. We have eight members on our team -- all have various responsibilities.
T.S. How many investigations has your team conducted?
M.E. Between 300-400. We try to stay busy.
T.S. Does it take special skills or talents to be a paranormal investigator?
M.E. It takes a bit of skill that is learned as you go along. It most definitely takes a kind heart and a strong constitution. A bit of intuition is also a plus.
T.S. Is there anything else that you would like people to know about Memphis Paranormal Investigations or about ghost hunting in general?
M.E. We have been featured on radio and television all over the world. We have cleaned 14 houses of unwanted spirit activity, with 100% success! When we clean a house, it stays clean!
T.S. How can Memphis Paranormal Investigations be contacted for an investigation?
M.E. You can call us at (901)859-4632 or email us at paranormal38111@aol.com.
