The most difficult part of getting in shape for some people is finding proper motivation. So when all else fails, some people do it to keep up their vices because even casual (and not-so-casual) drinkers know they need to exercise in order to keep on chugging.
This seems to be the catalyst for a portion of the new fitness movement in Memphis, and there are exercise classes and running groups springing up throughout the city that was once called Nashville's dirty, drunken cousin.
One such group is The Salty Dogs whose homebase is Bardog Tavern in downtown Memphis. Participants meet at the bar on Monday evenings for a three to five mile run/walk, in which drinking buddies become exercise buddies...or vice versa.
Either way, there is camaraderie in a healthy activity and beer at the finish line.
