Originally named The University Gallery, The Art Museum of the University of Memphis was intended to house contemporary art works and is an important part of the College of Communication and Fine Arts. In addition to contemporary art, there are other exhibits on display, including Egyptian and African artifacts. Best of all, the museum is open to the public and is free. African Collection:
The African Collection offers an nice array of West African artifacts for visitors to view. The largest segments of this collection are those of masks and of sculptures. These exhibits give great insight into the fascinating beliefs and practices of ancient West African tribes.
Egyptian Collection:
The Egyptian Collection contains an amazing assortment of ancient artifacts, many of which are thousands of years old. Some of the artifacts you can expect to see are scarab jewelry, an ancient sarcophagus, a mummy, and even a 4,000 year old loaf of bread! In addition, if you take the guided tour, you will learn all about life in ancient Egypt.
Works on Paper Collection:
This exhibit is a rotating collection of approximately 90 prints consisting of silkscreens, etchings, and other techniques. These works are intended to be a study collection for University of Memphis art students. As such, the exhibited prints are rotated each semester.
Changing Exhibits:
The Art Museum of the University of Memphis hosts regularly changing temporary exhibits. These exhibits showcase art in a variety of mediums by up-and-coming and established artists. The temporary collections are generally only on display for about a month, so there are new exhibits to see several times each year.

*Please note that the museum closes on University holidays and between temporary exhibitions. Be sure to call or visit the museum's website for the latest closings.
Visitor Information:
- Due to the sensitive nature of the exhibits, nothing on display should be touched, including the outer cases.
- There is no food, beverages, or smoking allowed in the museum.
- Large bulky items such as briefcases, shopping bags, umbrellas, and backpacks should be checked at the security desk.
- Photographs should not be taken inside the museum.
- If taking notes, only pencils are to be used.
- Free tours are offered to groups if reserved two weeks in advance.
Location:
The Art Museum of the University of Memphis is located on the first floor of the Communication and Fine Arts Building at 3750 Norriswood. Visitor parking is available in the Central Avenue parking lot. From there, cross Central and walk past the music building. You will soon see the Communication and Fine Arts Building on your right.
