Top 5 Ways to Make a Difference in Memphis

By Teresa R. Simpson, About.com

You don't have to have money or talent to make a difference in Memphis. All you need is a little bit of time and the drive to make your community a better place. To get you started, here are five wonderful things you can do to impact Memphis in a positive way.

1. Vote

The most powerful tool you have to bring about change is your vote. Make sure your voice is heard on a local, state, and federal level on election days. If you are not already registered to vote, you may do so in person at the Shelby County Election Commission office, the Department of Safety, the Health Department, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, any Memphis Public Library, and the Shelby County Clerk’s offices. Or you can download the voter’s registration form and mail it in.

2. Organize a Neighborhood Watch

A Neighborhood Watch is a great way to help prevent crime and get to know your neighbors – both of which will positively impact your community. Check out this step-by-step guide to organizing a neighborhood watch.

3. Mentor a Child

The Memphis City Schools’ new program, CONNECT, matches up children with adult mentors who provide friendship and guidance. With a time commitment of only one hour per week, this is an easy way to make an impact.

4. Become a Memphis Police Department Goodwill Ambassador

Goodwill Ambassadors act as liaisons between citizens and the police, fostering understanding of law enforcement within the community. To become a Goodwill Ambassador, you must first go through the Memphis Police Department’s Citizen’s Police Academy.

5. Donate blood

Is there any better way to make a difference in Memphis than to save lives? When you donate blood, you are doing just that. Because Memphis has the second largest medical district in the country, Lifeblood is always in need of more blood of all types. This is an (almost) painless way to make a contribution to your community.
