By Teresa R. Simpson, About.com

The City of Memphis Solid Waste Management provides a recycling service to all of its single family home customers. On regular trash pick-up day, they will pick up recyclables that are placed curbside in the tan recycle bins. The following items are recyclable:
Steel Cans:
All steel food, beverage and empty aerosol cans can be recycled. Labels and lids may be left on containers. The rinsing of containers is recommended.
Aluminum Cans:
All empty aluminum food and beverage cans may be recycled. Lids may be left on containers. The rinsing of containers is recommended.
Plastic Bottles:
All empty plastic milk, soda and other bottles and small food containers with the recycling symbol #1 PETE or #2 HDPE, usually made into the container side or bottom may be recycled. Remove caps but labels may be left attached. Rinsing is recommended.
Glass Bottles and Jars:
All empty clear, brown and green bottles and jars are recyclable. You can leave labels attached, but lids must be removed. Rinsing is not required.
Newspapers and Magazines:
All magazines, phone books and clean, dry newspapers with inserts are acceptable. Just put your newspapers, magazines and phone books in a paper bag and lay the paper bag(s) flat on top of the other mixed items in your bin. Cardboard, cereal and pizza boxes are not accepted.
Paper and Mail:
White and colored paper, envelopes, manila folders, stationery, notebook paper, sticky notes etc., may be recycled. Place in paper bag, either with newspaper and magazines or put into another paper bag.
