Establishing Residency in Memphis

By , About.com Guide

Moving is a tedious job even if you are just moving across town. But when you’re moving to a new city or state, it can be especially overwhelming. Here are a few things you will need to do when you make a move – and where to do them in Memphis.

Change Your Address
If you haven’t done so already, you will want to change your address with the post office immediately. This can be done online or at your neighborhood post office.

Turn on Utilities
Memphis Light Gas and Water is the city’s sole utility company and, as its name implies, it provides electricity, gas, and water.

Update Voter's Registration
You may do this in person at the Shelby County Election Commission office, the Department of Safety, the Health Department, the Department of Human Services, the Department of Veteran's Affairs, any Memphis Public Library, and the Shelby County Clerk's offices, or you may download and print the mail-in voter's registration form.

Get a Local Driver's License
If you already have a Tennessee driver's license, you may change your address online. If you hold an unexpired out-of-state license, you generally must only pass a vision test to be issued a Tennessee license. This can be done at any Tennessee driver's license testing center. Be sure to check out the latest proof of identity and residency requirements before you go.

Register Your Car
Your car must be registered to your new address within 30 days. This may be done at your local county clerk's office. Be sure to bring proof of residency, your car's vehicle identification number, and any applicable fees.
