Memphis in May Cultural Events - - 2008

Each year, the Memphis in May International Festival honors a different country. The chosen country for 2008 is Turkey. There will be a multitude of events going on throughout the city that will honor and celebrate Turkey and its culture. As these events are announced, they will be posted below.
Dinstinguished Architects of theWorld: This lecture on renowned international architects will be presented by acclaimed Turkish architect, Gunhan Danisman. The lecture will be held on May 6, 2008 at the University Club of Memphis at 1346 Central Avenue. Call (901) 722-3700 for ticket information and reservations.
Splendors of Turkey: Enjoy an evening of traditional Turkish music, dance, and samples of Turkish cuisine at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Memphis on May 8, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 per person.
Sultans and Soul International Gala: This event will feature dinner, cocktails, a Turkish music performance, dancing, and an official welcome to the Turkish delegation. A silent auction will also be held. The gala will be held at the Memphis Hilton on May 9, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $150 per person.
An Evening of Turkish Cinema: The Power House Gallery at 45 G.E. Patterson Avenue in Memphis will host a special evening of Turkish short films. This mini film festival will be held on May 14, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Turkish Photo Exhibit: The Memphis Botanic Garden will host an exhibit of Turkish photography that depicts Turkish life and culture by acclaimed artist Attila Durak. The exhibit will run from May 1-31, 2008 and admission is free.
Traditional Turkish Handicrafts: This exhibit of folkloric and traditional Turkish handicrafts will be on display at the Mississippi River Museum on Mud Island through the month of May. Admission is free to this exhibit.
Turkish Contemporary Art : This exhibit of modern Turkish paintings will be on display at the Central library at 3030 Poplar Avenue from May 1 - 31, 2008. Admission is free to this exhibit.
Turkish Plants and Islamic Design: Take a self-guided tour through the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and discover Islamic garden designs and Turkish plants that grow right here in our own backyard. This event runs from May 3-31, 2008 and admission is $7 for adults $5 for children 7-17 and free for children 6 and under.
