Each year, the Memphis in May International Festival honors a different country. The chosen country for 2009 is Chile. There will be a multitude of events going on throughout the city that will honor and celebrate Chile and its culture. As these events are announced, they will be posted below.
Chilean Life on Canvas:
This collection of Chilean paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries will be on display all month long at the Brooks Museum of Art, located at 1934 Poplar Avenue in Memphis. The exhibit is included with museum admission. Call (901) 544-6200 for additional information.
Landscapes of Extremes:
This collection of Chilean landscape photography will be on display all month long at the Memphis Botanic Gardens, located at 750 Cherry Road in Memphis. Admission to the exhibit is free. Call (901) 576-4100 for more information.
¡Abstracto!: Chilean Painting of the 1960s:
This collection of paintings reflects the political and social turbulence of 1960's Chile. It will be on display from April 4-May 31 at Dixon Gallery and Gardens, located at 4339 Park Avenue in Memphis and is included with museum admission.
The Life of Pablo Neruda:
This exhibit showcases the life of Pablo Neruda, a Chilean Nobel Prize winning poet. It will be on display all month long at the Central library, located at 3030 Poplar Avenue in Memphis. Admission is free. Call (901) 415-2700 for more information.
Chilean Maritime History :
See historic artifacts and photographs that highlight Chilean Naval history. The exhibit will be on display all month long at the Mud Island Mississippi River Museum, located at 125 N Front Street in Memphis. Admission to the Chilean exhibit is free. Call (901) 576-7230 for additional information.
Crowds in the Shadows:
This photography display depicts the events that took place throughout Chile's civil rights history. The exhibit will be shown all month long at the National Civil Rights Museum, located at 450 Mulberry Street in Memphis. Call (901) 521-9699 for more information.
Celebrate Chile!:
This performance by Ballet Folklórico Antumapu from the Universidad de Chile in Santiago will feature Chilean music and dance. It will be held live at the University of Memphis Rose Theatre on May 8 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $12. Call (901) 525-4611 for additional information.
Cinema of Chile:
This series of award-winning Chilean short films will be shown on May 13 at the Power House Gallery, located at 45 G.E. Patterson Avenue in Memphis. Admission is free.
Cuisine of Chile:
One of Chile's top chefs, Chef Guillermo Rodríguez, will partner with Chef Reinaldo Alfonso of Chez Philippe for a special dinner of Chilean cuisine. The dinner will be served on May 8 and 9 at Chez Philippe, located at 149 Union Avenue in Memphis. Call (901) 529-4188 for reservations.
