Memorial Day is a federal holiday designed to honor those who have died while serving in the U.S. Military. It falls each year on the last Monday in May. It is considered by many to be the unofficial start to summer. A lot of folks celebrate the holiday with cookouts, pool parties, and other outdoor activities. Below you will find some of the best events going on around town throughout Memorial Day Weekend. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to take a moment to remember those who have died for our freedoms.

Is there anything more American than baseball? Take in one game or five at the Back Yard Burger Memorial Day Bash. The tournament will be held at Gamedays Baseball's First Tennessee Fields in Cordova.
- Memorial Day Weekend at the Zoo

The Memphis Zoo has several events going on this Memorial Day weekend. Events include a four mile run, beer tasting, a bluegrass concert, and the opening of the Birds and Bees exhibit.
- Memphis in May Sunset Symphony

The Sunset Symphony is the finale event for the Memphis in May International Festival. Pack a picnic and head down to the river and take in the sounds of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. In addition to selections from the festival's honored country, the orchestra will also perform patriotic favorites. There will also be a one hour air show in tribute to those who served during World War II.

The Olympic-size pool(and babypool!) at Meeman-Shelby State Park opens annually on Memorial Day weekend for the summer. What a great way to kick off the summer!

The National Cemetery of Memphis will be holding a special ceremony in honor Memorial Day. The National Cemetery is located near Jackson and National at 3568 Townes Avenue.
