Sexual predators are out there and in a city the size of Memphis, there's a good chance that you come into contact with them on a regular basis. Fortunately, all three states in the greater Memphis area maintain a searchable database of registered sex offenders. Before you start your search, however, here are some things to keep in mind.
- Sex Offender Registries Include All Types of Offenders
With few exceptions (see below), all convicted sex offenders appear on the registries. While this includes violent rapists and pedophiles, it may also include an 19 year old who got caught having sex with his 15 year old girlfriend (statutory rape). While I don't mean to minimize any sex crime, it is worth noting that not all offenders are the same.
- Sex Offenders Can Be Removed From the Registry
In some instances, a convicted sex offender may be removed from the registry if he or she is not considered to be a threat to others (as in some statutory rape cases) and/or after a number of years have passed since the conviction. Violent sex offenders are never removed from the registry.
- Sex Offender Registry Search Criteria
In each of the three metro area states you may search the sex offender registries by name, alias, city, county, state, or zip code. The zip code search function is especially helpful for determining if there are any registered sex offenders in your neighborhood.
- Information Included in the Registry
Results from a sex offender search will show the offender's photograph, name, aliases used, address (address range in Arkansas), birthdate, description, offense, and date of conviction.
