Memphis mayor, Willie Herenton, is scheduled to box former heavyweight champion, Joe Frazier, in a three round match on November 30, 2006. The fight will take place at the Peabody Hotel and is expected to raise $100,000 for the Shelby County Drug Court.

History

It all started when Jack Mayer, a 1972 Golden Gloves champion and member of the Drug Court Foundation's board, brought the idea of a match back home after attending a boxing camp with Joe Frazier in 2005.

Originally, the fight was organized as a fund-raiser to benefit Lemoyne Owen College, Herenton's alma mater. Now, though, it seems that the Shelby County Drug Court is to be its only beneficiary. The Drug Court is an alternative program for nonviolent adult offenders with drug charges.

Both contenders have boxing backgrounds, though Frazier, of course, boxed professionally while Herenton went into politics.
