By , About.com Guide

Ice cream is the perfect treat for everyone. It's cold, it's sweet, and it comes in enough varieties to suit almost any taste. Fortunately for local ice cream lovers, the Memphis area has no shortage of shops that serve up this frosty dessert. From Chunky Monkey to Cherry Cheesecake, Truffles in Paradise to Oreo Overload, you are sure to find the perfect flavor at one of these Mid-South ice cream shops.

1. Maggie Moo's

Maggie Moo's makes their ice cream right there in the shop. And each flavor can be customized with the add-ins of your choice. For example, what about cheesecake ice cream with fresh raspberries mixed in? Or what about Irish Cream ice cream with cappucino chips? Yum! There are two Maggie Moo's locations in the Memphis area to satisfy your cravings.

Jerry's is only opened seasonally, however, so be sure to visit when the weather is warm.

7. TCBY

Okay, so TCBY doesn't actually sell ice cream. Instead, they serve up "The Country's Best Yogurt." Frozen yogurt, that is. This stuff comes in more than sixty flavors and you can pick and choose from dozens of toppings. While frozen yogurt does not taste exactly like ice cream, it is close enough that your taste buds won't mind. And the fact that it has fewer calories and fat grams than ice cream means that your hips won't mind, either!

8. Dairy Queen

While many Dairy Queen locations feature hot food in addition to ice cream, it is ice cream that this franchise is known for. Soft serve is the signature treat at DQ but it is done in a variety of ways. You can choose soft serve in a cone or dish, dipped in a chocolate shell, blended with candy or cookies into a Blizzard, or coated in sauce for a delicious sundae. If that's not enough, they offer ice cream cakes for any special occasion. There are two Dairy Queens in the Memphis area.

9. Sheridan's

This is another ice cream imposter but Sheridan's frozen custard is so good, we just couldn't leave it off the list. And while the frozen custard is fabulous in its unadulterated state, it is even better with one or two of their toppings mixed in. They've got mangos, cashews, Ande's Mints, and just about any other topping you could dream up. There are two Sheridan's locations in the Memphis area--one in Cordova and one in Bartlett.
