Guide Review - The Pancake Shop

Although I only gave The Pancake Shop 2.5 stars (see my rating system for an explanation of stars), it is important to note that I love this restaurant! If that sounds contradictory, please allow me to explain.

The Pancake shop has been sitting inconspicuously in a shopping strip on Summer Avenue near Mendenhall since 1989. It is a small establishment but a local favorite. The parking lot is nearly always packed, even in the middle of the night.

The restaurant typically employs a "please seat yourself" policy. This is easy to do as nearly all of the seating is visible from the front door with the exception of a few tables in the non-smoking room. Even if you sit in the non-smoking area, you can be sure that smoke will still drift your way.

The waitresses at the Pancake Shop usually come across as either bored or brash but tend to warm up if they discover that you're friendly. Don't get me wrong, though. This attitude is part of the restaurant's greasy-spoon-charm.

Speaking of greasy, the food at The Pancake Shop is definitely that. From hashbrowns to sausage gravy, cheeseburgers to country ham, there are plenty of high-fat, high-cholesterol options on the menu. And though they may not be good for you, they absolutely hit the spot when you're looking for something deep-fried and delicious. The best part is, you can easily get a full meal at The Pancake Shop for $5.00 or less. There are pricier meals on the menu, of course, and these will run you a whopping seven or eight dollars.

Hands down, this is the best place in Memphis to get a 3:00 a.m. chocolate-chip-pancake fix or a late night cup of coffee. So why 2.5 stars? I awarded one star for value, one star for atmosphere, and a half star for the food, itself.
