While it is undeniable that entertainment abounds in the area, a growing number of people are also coming to work and live downtown. Renovated apartments and lofts, newly built condominiums, and revitalized areas with affordable housing are drawing more and more residents to the area. Combine that with a large percentage of Memphis employers and you have a great area to live, work, and play.

- As of April 2009, approximately 27,000 people live downtown.
- Over half of them are 35 years or older.
- There are over 5,700 apartments in downtown Memphis.
- About 60% of downtown residents are black, 30% are white, 5% are Hispanic, and 5% are of other races.
- Approximately 65,000 people work downtown.
- 12% of all businesses in the Greater Memphis Area are located downtown.
- Most of downtown lies in these zip codes: 38103, 38105, 38106, 38107, and 38126
- Downtown Memphis is usually considered to be within these boundaries: the Mississippi River to the west, the Wolf River to the north, Danny Thomas Boulevard to the east, and E.H. Crump Boulevard to the south. The Memphis Central Business Improvement District, however, also includes the Medical District.
