Annual Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday

Each year since 2006, the state of Tennessee has held a weekend-long sales tax holiday in which certain items are tax exempt. This annual sales tax holiday begins on the first Friday in August at 12:01 a.m. and ends at 11:59 p.m. on the following Sunday.

Friday, August 5th, 12:01 a.m. -- Sunday, August 7th, 11:59 p.m.

Sales tax exempt items include the following school supplies, clothing, and computers:

School and Art Supplies ($100 or less per item)

  • Binders
  • Backpacks
  • Calculators
  • Chalk
  • Clay and Glazes
  • Compasses
  • Crayons
  • Erasers
  • Folders
  • Glue
  • Highlighters
  • Index Cards and Boxes
  • Legal Pads
  • Lunch Boxes
  • Markers
  • Notebooks
  • Paint and Paintbrushes
  • Paper
  • Pencil Boxes (a.k.a. school boxes)
  • Pencils
  • Pencil Sharpeners
