Earth Day and Arbor Day in Memphis

By , About.com Guide

Although Memphis may not be the greenest city in the world, we do have a variety of events going on in celebration of both Earth Day and Arbor Day. Learn more about these days and find events going on throughout the Mid-South

Earth Day vs. Arbor Day:

Earth Day is observed on April 22 and was created in 1970 to increase awareness of environment issues and to inspire conservancy and protection of the Earth's natural resources.

Arbor Day is observed nationally on the last Friday in April and was begun in 1872 to promote tree planting and care. Officially, the state of Tennessee observes Arbor Day on the first Friday in March.

Down to Earth Festival:

This all-day event at Shelby Farms will feature live music, family activities, a kids' zone, eco-art and vendors, and more. The event will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2012 and will begin at 10:00 a.m. Visit the Shelby Farms website for further information.

Neighborhood Clean Ups:

Each year, the Memphis City Beautiful Commission coordinates clean up and beautification projects in neighborhoods all over Memphis. These projects include picking up litter, planting gardens, and clearing vacant lots. Visit the Memphis City Beautiful Commission website for more information.

Arbor Day 5K:

Participants will run or walk through the grounds of Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis' oldest active cemetery. Registration is $20 and proceeds will go toward the care and maintenance of the arboretum. Dates for the 2012 TBA. Visit Elmwood's website to register or for additional information.

Germantown Arbor Day Expo:

The expo features information and exhibits on recycling, organic gardening, eco-friendly products, and other help for going green. Also, Germantown residents can receive a free tree seedling with proof of residency. The Arbor Day Expo will take place on March 2, 2012. Visit the City of Germantown website for more information.
