R.I.P., Mr. Chuck

I was saddened to hear earlier this month that local children's television host, Charles Scruggs--better known as Mr. Chuck--had passed away. Over the weekend, this beloved Memphis icon was laid to rest.

If you were a child in Memphis or raised a child in Memphis from 1993 to the present, odds are good that you watched "Hello Mr. Chuck" on WKNO. If you're not familiar with the show, Mr. Chuck was something like a local Mr. Rogers. He was a gentle man who was something of an on-air grandfather to the children of the Mid-South.

I had the opportunity to hear Mr. Chuck speak at a childcare provider's workshop a number of years ago. In person, he was every bit as kindly as he was on television and offered a wealth of advice to those who worked with children.

It goes without saying that Mr. Chuck will be missed in the community--not only as an entertainer but also as simply a kind man who made our city a nicer place.
