When I started hearing the forecasts calling for an ice storm, I was immediately taken back to the ice storm of 1994. Whether you were in the area back then or not, you've likely heard the stories of weeks-long power outages, battery and candle shortages, and an extended vacation from school for students.
At the moment, the ice storm of 2013 doesn't seem like it will shape up to be quite as severe. Nevertheless there is a shimmering layer of ice on just about everything outside as well as a conspicuous absence of milk and bread at the grocery store.
While the streets are simply wet right now, there is some concern that they will be slick and icy in the morning. Even if the ice isn't obvious, watch out for black ice that can catch drivers unaware.
In any case, be careful out there. As always, if you have some photos of the winter weather you'd like to share, please send them to me in an email at memphis@aboutguide.com.
