A few years ago, unclaimed property was all the rage. Companies were popping up all over the Internet, promising to find any unclaimed money due to you--for a fee, of course. Soon after, many states made the unclaimed property sections of their treasury departments easily accessible to the public.
So every now and then, I visit the Tennessee Unclaimed Property website and do a search for my name. And my husband's name. And the names of pretty much all my friends and family. Every now and then I get a possible hit and a couple of times, my family members were really due (and eventually collected) small amounts of money.
If you have ever lived or worked in Tennessee, it's worth taking a few seconds to search for your name. There may be an old insurance policy you forgot about. Or maybe you never picked up your final paycheck from a job you held years ago. There are many ways in which you could have unclaimed property waiting for you. Read this quick guide to find out if you do and how to claim it. Or, if you have already found unclaimed money of your own, share your story with us.
