Each year as Independence Day approaches, I receive a few emails from folks wondering about the legalities of fireworks in Memphis and Shelby County. Most of these emails come from people who are new to the area or who will be visiting here during the 4th of July holiday but every now and then, a long term resident is looking for answers on this issue. Why? Because he or she has neighbors who unabashedly shoot off fireworks every year, leaving them to wonder if they were misinformed about the law.
Unfortunately, it is illegal to ignite fireworks anywhere in Shelby County. Yes, many people do it every year with no apparent consequences. But if you want to be sure to stay out of trouble, leave the fireworks to the professionals and enjoy one of the impressive fireworks displays going on all over town.
