Does the City Council Care About Crime?

Thursday November 20, 2008
The Memphis City Council voted down a resolution this week that would permit newly recruited police officers to live within 20 miles of Shelby County. Proponents of the resolution maintained that this would be an easy way to broaden the recruitment pool and would hopefully result in more police officers being hired.

It seems that no one disputed the fact that we have a crime problem in Memphis. In fact, according to the Commercial Appeal, a number of top executives of Memphis companies were endorsing the resolution. Why? Because these execs can't recruit qualified candidates themselves because people are hesitant to relocate to crime-ridden Memphis.

Council members who voted against the resolution put the onus of finding qualified police recruits on the police department, itself. These members (most notably, Wanda Halbert) have suggested that the police department has turned away plenty of qualified candidates for illegitimate reasons.

Be that as it may, it is time to get our city's crime problem under control and by any means necessary. Does the police department need to change its hiring practices? Maybe so. But in the meantime, let's open up the recruitment pool and get as many good officers on the street as possible.

Until then, I am left to wonder: does the Memphis City Council care a thing about the crime in our city?

(1) That Guy From L.A. says:

Newly moved here from Los Angeles and it seems absolutely no one cares about anything out here. It feels like we’re still in the 50’s & 60’s out here. Racism is still shinning strong and everybody is as dumb as a door knob. Ignorance reigns in Memphis!
