Controversial Sign?

Friday November 7, 2008
I read a story on the WMC website today that I found particularly un-newsworthy. According to the story, Gracewood Baptist Church in Southaven, Mississippi has posted a message on its sign that some people are finding outrageous. The sign is promoting Sunday's sermon which will be "Exiles in an Obama Nation."

The pastor of the church explained the sermon subject (and consequently the sign) by saying that the church and Obama disagree on issues such as homosexuality and abortion. With that in mind, the sign makes sense. Many conservative Christians probably do feel alienated when a liberal president with opposing views is in office. If McCain had won, would people be up in arms if the MGLCC or Planned Parenthood posted a sign that said "Exiles in a McCain Nation"? I suspect not.

No matter what your political views are, I think we can all agree that one of our great freedoms is the right to not only disagree with our leaders, but to say so publicly. When someone exercising that right makes the evening news, that's a good indication that we, as a society, either need to stop being so sensitive or we need to find something to help us occupy our time.
