Check Your Freezer for Tainted Beef
Friday July 4, 2008
An E. coli outbreak in Michigan and Ohio that was the result of tainted ground beef may now have hit closer to home. Nebraska Beef, the company that distributed the meat, has expanded their recall to include Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The recall includes ground beef sold fresh at the meat counter or fresh in Styrofoam trays. The products have a sell-by date of May 21 through July 3 and would have probably been purchased at Kroger. Though you likely wouldn't still have the affected products in your fridge, you could still have them in your freezer. So before you toss any hamburgers on the grill this holiday weekend, be sure to check the sell-by dates on your ground beef. As an added precaution, always cook your hamburgers to an internal temperature of 160 degrees or higher to kill any bacteria in the meat.
