No Swimming in the City

Monday June 9, 2008
Although originally scheduled to reopen on Monday, local officials have announced that all city owned swimming pools will remain closed until further notice. This, in case you missed it, is the result of two drowning deaths at community center pools -- both of which occurred on opening day of the swimming season. The drownings happened at the Pine Hill Community Center and the Charles Powell Community Center and are still under investigation. In the meantime, officials want to reevaluate the city pools' policies and proceedures to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again. Until then, if you want to go swimming, you will have to go to a county or state owned pool. A good one, in my opinion, is the pool at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park (a.k.a. Shelby Forest).
