I absolutely love the snow. I love its beauty as it is falling from the sky, I love the sound it makes while it's crunching under your feet, and I love the way it turns even the most grown-up of adults into kids again. And, if I am going to be perfectly honest, I love the fact that the whole city shuts down for the snow, giving many of us a snow day from work or school.
Now that March is here, the odds of Memphis getting a snow day seem slim to none. I don't ever remember seeing a significant snowfall in March and I've lived in Memphis for 30 years. With that in mind, I was surprised to learn recently that the two biggest snowfalls in Memphis history actually took place in March. The first of these storms occurred between March 16-17, 1892. This storm left a whopping 18 inches of snow on the ground. The second occurred on March 22, 1968 when the city ended up with an impressive 16.5 inches of snow.
And though I am not going to hold my breath for snow this March, it is nice to know that such an event is possible.
